Launched in August 2003 by Niklas Zennström, Janus Friis, and four Estonian developers, Skype quickly became a pioneer in online voice and video calls, reshaping how people connected across the globe. Its familiar ringtone and reliable service made long-distance communication more personal and intimate, creating cherished memories for those who used Skype over the years. According to insights from the Ipsos iSay community, the decline of Skype has led to notable shifts in communication preferences.
From Skype to Teams: A New Era in Communication
Before its retirement, Skype was used for various purposes. Notably, personal video calls with friends and family accounted for 30.4%, while business or professional meetings comprised 13.10%. Instant messaging and chat were used by 4.8%, and 5.8% of users made international calls. Educational purposes had the least usage at 2.7%. Interestingly, 43.2% of respondents reported they rarely or never used Skype at all.
Following Skype's decline, the landscape of preferred communication platforms shifted dramatically. WhatsApp emerged as the dominant choice for daily communication needs. Microsoft Teams, the very platform that succeeded Skype, highlights its effectiveness in professional settings. Discord maintains a niche presence, particularly among gaming and younger demographics.
