Expressions of Love
When it comes to general attitudes about the holiday, most people have warm feelings toward Valentine’s Day. About a third (31%) are absolutely in love with V-Day, while another third (34%) enjoy the day but don’t go overboard. Others believe it’s just a commercial holiday (19%), while some choose not to celebrate it at all (16%).
Who you choose to spend Valentine’s Day with can make a difference. It’s no surprise that most are planning to spend the day with the people they love the most – their significant others (45%) or family (28%). Still, about one in five (20%) will enjoy some quality “me” time by spending Valentine’s Day on their own.
Dinner or a Movie?
Choosing how to celebrate Valentine's Day in Canada can be as exciting as the day itself! A romantic dinner at a restaurant is the top choice for just under a third of Ipsos iSay sweethearts (30%), while slight more (35%) would prefer a cozy night in with movies.
For the cozy crowd, the big decision is choosing what to watch. By far, the most-chosen favorite romantic film is The Notebook (21%). Other movies that set the mood include Pretty Woman (18%), Dirty Dancing (14%), and Titanic (11%).
Sweet Surprises
Valentine's Day gifts can range from extravagant to wonderfully personal, offering something for every kind of romantic. Of course, the timeless appeal of flowers and chocolates is preferred by about one quarter of Ipsos iSay (24%). These classics never go out of style! For those dreaming big, 36% would love Valentine’s Day to come with a surprise getaway. Luckily, Valentine’s Day gifts don’t have to be expensive – many prefer the charm of personalized gifts like a handwritten love letter (10%) or a photo album (11%). Sometimes the best things come from the heart, not the store!
For those with a sweet tooth this Valentine’s Day, about half (49%) would like to satisfy that craving with chocolate candies. Another top treat is chocolate dipped strawberries (21%).
