As of May 5, 2025, Skype has officially retired in favour of Microsoft Teams, marking the end of a significant chapter in the history of online communication. Launched in August 2003 by Niklas Zennström, Janus Friis, and four Estonian developers, Skype quickly became a pioneer in online voice and video calls, reshaping how people connected across the globe. Its familiar ringtone and reliable service made long-distance communication more personal and intimate, creating cherished memories for those who used Skype over the years. According to insights from the Ipsos iSay community, the decline of Skype has led to notable shifts in communication preferences.
From Skype to Teams: A New Era in Communication
Before its retirement, Skype served multiple purposes. Interestingly, personal video calls with friends and family made up 26.1% of its usage, while business or professional meetings accounted for 14.9%. Instant messaging and chat were utilized by 3.7% of users, and 3% used it for international calls. Educational purposes recorded a usage rate of 13.4%. Notably, 38.8% of respondents indicated that they rarely or never used Skype.
Following Skype's decline, the landscape of preferred communication platforms shifted dramatically. WhatsApp emerged as the dominant choice, now favored by 60.9% of users for daily communication needs. Microsoft Teams, the very platform that succeeded Skype, serves 16.4% of users, highlighting its effectiveness in professional settings. Discord, chosen by 1.8%, maintains a niche presence, particularly among gaming and younger demographics.
This transition underscores the dynamic nature of digital communication, where adaptability to new platforms like WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams becomes crucial for maintaining seamless connections.
