Hello, Ipsos iSay visitors! We're back with some fresh insights from our latest study*, and this time we're diving into the world of home fitness. It's clear that the way we exercise has evolved, and the home gym is no longer just a temporary solution but a permanent fixture for many. In 2025, the motivation to work out at home is stronger than ever, driven by a desire for convenience, efficiency, and a more holistic approach to health. Let's explore what's driving this trend and what equipment is helping our members achieve their fitness goals.
Home Gym Ownership Among Our Members
Our recent study shows that a significant number of our members have embraced the home workout lifestyle. A remarkable 49% of our respondents own or plan to buy affordable home gym equipment. This shift towards at-home fitness is not just about convenience; it's about creating a personalized wellness space that caters to individual needs and goals.
Home Gym Essentials: What the Data Reveals
So, what are the go-to pieces of equipment for home workouts? Our study revealed a clear preference for versatile and effective tools.
Topping the list are dumbbells, with 52% owning a pair. This comes as no surprise, as dumbbells are incredibly versatile for building muscle, improving bone health, and enhancing your overall functional fitness, which helps with everyday activities. They are a cornerstone of strength training and can be used for a wide range of exercises that target different muscle groups.
Coming in a strong second is the yoga mat, with 41% having one at home. This highlights a growing focus on not just physical strength, but also on mental well-being, flexibility, and balance. A yoga mat provides a comfortable and stable surface for a variety of floor exercises, protecting your joints and defining your personal workout space.
Treadmills are another popular choice, with 37% owning one. They offer a fantastic cardiovascular workout, helping to improve heart health, burn calories, and even boost your mood by releasing endorphins. The ability to control your workout's intensity and the low-impact nature of running on a cushioned surface make treadmills a safe and effective option.
Resistance bands are also a favorite, with 34% of our members using them. These affordable and portable tools are perfect for a full-body workout, are gentle on the joints, and help improve stability and control. They are excellent for both warm-ups and strength training, making them a versatile addition to any home gym.
Beyond the top four, our members have a wide array of equipment to keep their routines diverse. The stationary bike is a popular choice for 30%, offering a great low-impact cardio workout that strengthens the lower body and improves heart health. For building upper body and core strength, 25% of our members turn to a pull-up bar. We also see that many respondents are incorporating more specialized strength training, with 23% owning kettlebells for dynamic, full-body movements and another 23% having a barbell and plates for serious lifting. To mix things up with some high-energy cardio and stress relief, 22% have a punching bag. Recovery is also a clear priority, with 19% of members owning a foam roller to help ease muscle soreness. Rounding out the list are other cardio machines like steppers (15%), rowing machines (14%), and climbing machines (13%), which provide excellent full-body, low-impact workouts.
Budgeting for Your Fitness Goals
Creating a home gym doesn't have to break the bank. Our study found that a significant portion of our members have a reasonable budget in mind for their fitness equipment. The most common affordable budget was $100-$200, with 38% of respondents falling into this category. This was followed by more than $200 (32%) and $50-$100 (25%). This shows that you can start building a well-equipped home gym with a modest investment.
Staying Motivated in 2025
The key to a successful home fitness routine is staying motivated. In 2025, the focus is on finding joy in movement and celebrating progress, not perfection. Here are a few tips to keep your motivation high:
- Mix It Up: With a variety of equipment at your disposal, from dumbbells to resistance bands, you can keep your workouts fresh and exciting. Trying new exercises and routines can prevent boredom and challenge your body in new ways.
- Set Realistic Goals: Whether it's working out three times a week or mastering a new yoga pose, setting small, achievable goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and keep you moving forward.
- Embrace Technology: The world of fitness is increasingly digital. From fitness apps to online classes, there are endless resources to guide your workouts and connect with a virtual fitness community.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to what your body needs. Some days you might be up for a high-intensity treadmill session, while on other days, a gentle stretching routine on your yoga mat might be what's best. Recovery is just as important as the workout itself.
The trend of home fitness is here to stay, and it's clear that having the right equipment and a positive mindset are key to success. We hope these insights from our latest study inspire you on your personal fitness journey. Happy exercising!
