How Ipsos iSay visitors in Europe & North America Recharge Their Minds

With World Mental Health Day just around the corner, we took a peek at how Ipsos iSay web visitors from Europe and North America unwind, recharge, and lift their spirits after busy days. The results are both enlightening and a little playful – perfect for a mental health check-in!

1. Finding Your Switch-Off Moment
We asked visitors between October 6th-8th: “Which factor contributes most to your ability to mentally switch off and recharge after a busy day?”

💡 Fun insight: It seems most people are “doers” when it comes to switching off – either moving their body or diving into a hobby beats chatting on the couch.

  • Engaging in a fulfilling hobby or passion project – 35.2%
  • Daily physical activity or time outdoors – 31.5%
  • Having a firm, respected cut-off time from work/study – 18.6%
  • Deep, meaningful conversations with friends or family – 14.7%

Creative outlets and movement top the list when it comes to recharging — from crafting, gaming, or side projects to simply getting outdoors, these activities fuel mental energy best. While setting boundaries between work and personal time helps, it’s not always enough on its own. And though meaningful conversations with loved ones matter, most people prefer to unwind solo before reconnecting.

2. Who Do We Call When We Need a Boost?

On 7 October, visitors shared who they’d reach out to for a quick emotional lift or simple favour.

💡 Fun insight: Family wins hands down – we trust our relatives with emergency pep talks more than anyone else.

  • Family member – 65.3%
  • Close friend – 23.6%
  • Colleague or peer – 1.5%
  • No one – 9.6%

When our poll voters need a quick emotional boost, family is the go-to support network — parents, siblings, and partners are the first to answer the call. Close friends come next, ideal for small favours or venting sessions, while colleagues are rarely turned to unless it’s a last resort. Still, nearly one in ten say they have no one to reach out to, reminding us how important it is to stay connected.

3. Quick Takeaways for Mental Health World Day

Based on what people who participated shared, here are a few simple habits that can help boost your mental well-being every day:

  • Schedule time for hobbies and outdoor activity – your brain will thank you.
  • Set a clear boundary between work/study and personal time.
  • Keep your support network close – whether that’s family, friends, or both.

Mental health isn’t one-size-fits-all, but these insights show that simple, everyday habits can make a big difference. So, take a breath, pick up that hobby, and maybe call a loved one today – your mental recharge starts here!
