Netflix vs Cinema: Why Convenience Competes with the Big-Screen Experience

Netflix or the cinema? It's a question that movie lovers continue to debate. For some, the perfect movie night means relaxing at home and streaming a film on Netflix. For others, nothing compares to the atmosphere of watching a movie on the big screen.

Ipsos iSay Question of the Day results reveal an interesting contradiction. While many respondents watch movies on Netflix regularly, the cinema's big-screen experience remains the standout reason people enjoy going to the movies. So, if the big screen is such a powerful draw, why are so many people choosing Netflix instead?

Let's take a closer look at what members and visitors had to say about Netflix, cinema-going, and their movie-watching preferences.

Netflix vs Cinema

The Cinema's Biggest Attraction Wasn't Even Close

When respondents were asked what they enjoy most about watching movies at the cinema, the answer was clear: the big-screen experience came out on top (56.9%).

In fact, it was more popular than surround sound (13.4%), social outings (21.2%), and popcorn and snacks (8.5%) combined.

While spending time with friends and family (21.2%) was the second most popular response, the results suggest that the cinema's biggest attraction is still the experience of watching a film on a large screen.

For many respondents, that's what makes a trip to the movies feel different from watching at home.

The Real Surprise? Netflix Is Still Part of the Routine

Despite the strong appeal of the cinema experience, Netflix remains a regular part of movie watching for many respondents.

Around six in ten said they watch movies on Netflix either daily (28.8%) or weekly (31.3%).

At the same time, nearly one-third reported watching movies on Netflix only rarely (30.5%), showing that viewing habits vary considerably among members and visitors.

Still, the results make one thing clear: Netflix plays an important role in how many respondents choose to watch movies.

So Why Choose Netflix Instead of Going to the Cinema?

This is where the story takes an interesting turn. When respondents were asked for their main reason for choosing Netflix over the cinema, convenience was the clear winner (44.9%). Not only was it the most popular answer, but it was selected nearly three times as often as cost (15.8%). Variety of content ranked second (26.2%), while avoiding crowds came in at 13.1%.

These results suggest that respondents turn to Netflix for convenience (44.9%), while the cinema's biggest attraction is the big-screen experience (56.9%).

In other words, the thing respondents love most about the cinema isn't necessarily the thing that drives their decision when it's time to choose how to watch a movie.

It's Not Netflix vs Cinema, it's Convenience vs Experience

Taken together, the results paint a fascinating picture. The cinema's greatest strength is the experience it offers, with more than half of respondents selecting the big screen as their favorite part of going to the movies (56.9%).

Netflix, meanwhile, appears to stand out for its convenience, which was the top reason respondents said they chose it over a cinema visit (44.9%).

Rather than identifying a clear winner in the Netflix versus cinema debate, the survey suggests that respondents use both options for different reasons. Streaming services provide convenience and accessibility, while cinemas continue to deliver the immersive movie experience many viewers value most.
