What Matters Most When Choosing Back-to-School Products?

Back-to-school shopping is an important time of year for families, as they prepare for a new school year and choose everything from school supplies and clothing to technology and everyday essentials. But what matters most when deciding which products to buy?

We asked our community:

“What is the most important factor when choosing back-to-school products?”

A total of 3,861 English-speaking users took part in our Question of the Day, sharing what matters most to them when making back-to-school purchasing decisions.

Quality Comes First

The results were clear: quality was the most important factor, selected by 49.5% of respondents.

This suggests that nearly half of participants place durability, reliability and overall product quality above other considerations when choosing back-to-school items. For products that may need to last throughout the school year, shoppers may be looking beyond the lowest price and considering whether a product offers lasting value.

Promotions and Discounts Remain Important

Promotions and discounts ranked second in our poll, with 24.7% of respondents choosing this option.

With back-to-school shopping often involving multiple purchases, discounts can make a meaningful difference to the overall budget.

Price Matters — But It Isn't Everything

Price was selected by 15.6% of respondents in our poll.

While price remains an important consideration, our results suggest that shoppers may be looking at the bigger picture rather than simply choosing the cheapest option. The combination of quality (49.5%) and price (15.6%) highlights the importance of getting good value from a purchase.

What About Brands and Product Features?

For our respondents, product features were selected by 6.2%, while brand reputation was chosen by 4%.

This indicates that, compared with quality, promotions, and price, fewer respondents considered these factors the most important when making their back-to-school choices.

However, this does not mean that brand reputation or product features are unimportant. Depending on the type of product, shoppers may consider factors such as functionality, durability, trust in a brand, or specific features before making their final decision.

What Our Poll Tells Us

Our Question of the Day reveals an interesting hierarchy of priorities:

  • Quality — 49.5%
  • Promotions and discounts — 24.7%
  • Price — 15.6%
  • Product features — 6.2%
  • Brand reputation — 4.0%

Overall, quality was selected by almost half of respondents, making it the clear leading consideration in our poll. At the same time, the combined 40.3% who selected price or promotions and discounts shows that affordability and value remain significant parts of the back-to-school shopping decision.

Back-to-school shopping is therefore not necessarily about finding the cheapest product. For many shoppers, it is about finding products that offer the right balance between quality, value and affordability.
