How Europeans Celebrated World Book Day

For many, World Book Day 2025 is a time for personal enjoyment and a fresh start with reading. A lively 19.10% of people chose to buy a new book during World Book Day. They eagerly dove into new stories and supported the talented authors behind them. 

Meanwhile, 17.80% found comfort in rereading favourite books from their own collections. This strengthens their emotional connection to stories they've loved before. Additionally, 10.30% celebrated by visiting a local library or bookstore. They enjoyed the literary atmosphere and discovered new books. 

Interestingly, 52.80% hadn't yet participated in World Book Day 2025 activities. This highlights a great chance to spark their interest in the wonderful world of books. 

European Reading Preferences in 2025 

Our poll also explored what Europeans love to read, revealing a diverse range of tastes. 

  • Mystery and thriller books captivated 24.20% of readers. This shows a strong and lasting interest in suspenseful stories that keep people guessing. 
  • Fiction continues to charm at 16.90%, offering endless imaginative possibilities. 
  • Fantasy and sci-fi books transport 12.40% of readers to incredible new worlds. 
  • However, 10.30% admitted they aren't fans of books. This presents an exciting opportunity to help them discover the joy of reading.

When thinking about what to read in 2025, readers are influenced by several factors. 

  • Personal recommendations from friends and family play a significant role for 27.30% of readers. This shows the powerful impact of word-of-mouth. 
  • Book reviews and ratings are also important, guiding 24.70% of readers in their choices within the vast world of literature. 
  • Furthermore, the reputation of favourite authors influences 23.20%, highlighting the lasting appeal of great storytellers.
