The Meaning Behind Spring Cleaning

Cleaning in spring isn’t just about wiping down surfaces or airing out the house. It’s a tradition with deeper roots—and for many, it’s a way to hit the reset button. After the long winter months, it feels like a fresh start. It’s that moment when we open the windows, let in the light, and feel ready to bring a little order back into our lives.

So what’s the meaning of spring cleaning? On the surface, it’s a deep cleaning session for your home. But underneath, it’s about creating space—physically and mentally. Clearing out clutter, scrubbing away the dust, and reorganizing shelves isn’t just practical—it can also feel incredibly satisfying. It gives us the feeling of control and a sense of calm, like we’re ready to welcome whatever the new season brings.

That’s also why it’s called spring cleaning: it’s tied to the season of renewal. Nature wakes up, and we do too. For many, this annual ritual has become a kind of personal tradition—something that brings rhythm, purpose, and a little peace of mind.

Room-By-Room Breakdown

Below is the room-by-room breakdown elaborating on the importance and necessary steps for cleaning during the spring cleaning time of the year.

Prioritizing Your Spaces

Given that the biggest priorities for American people who say they are spring cleaning are the kitchen, bedroom(s), and bathroom(s), with about six in ten saying these are the priority spaces (64%, 61%, and 59%, respectively), it's essential to allocate sufficient time and resources to these areas.

Kitchen Cleaning Plan

Week 1: Focus on the kitchen. Begin by decluttering cabinets and pantry. Follow up with deep cleaning appliances and sanitizing surfaces.

Bedroom and Wardrobe Refresh

Week 2: Tackle the bedrooms. This involves dusting, vacuuming, and especially organizing the wardrobes. Consider donating items you no longer need.

Bathroom Deep Clean

Week 3: Dedicate this week to bathrooms. From scrubbing tiles to sanitizing fixtures, ensure these spaces are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Additional Areas

Week 4: Address other areas like the living room, laundry room, and hallways. Don't forget to wash linens and clean windows.

But Do You Clean Efficiently? Use a Checklist!

It’s important to keep up with what you already did and can do. Here are some ideas based on our surveys:

Kitchen Deep Clean

The kitchen, a hub of daily activity and family gatherings, likely demands more attention during spring cleaning. Among Americans who say they spring clean, the kitchen is a top focus, with about six in ten (64%) considering it a priority space. Therefore, it is important to take a comprehensive approach to cleaning this area.

Cleaning the refrigerator, organizing pantry items, deep cleaning the oven, and sanitizing countertops are just a few tasks that will probably transform your kitchen into a sparkling and healthy environment.

Living Room Refresh

The living room, a common area for relaxation and socializing, more often than not deserves a freshening up. From dusting and vacuuming to rearranging furniture for a new perspective, a thorough living room cleaning will likely enhance the overall ambiance of your home.

Just under half (46%) of those who spring clean say the family room is a priority. So, while not as high on the list as the kitchen or bedroom, the living room likely still plays a vital role in presenting a clean, welcoming space for friends and family.

Bedroom and Wardrobe Organization

Bedrooms, our personal sanctuaries, require special attention during spring cleaning. Around 61% of Americans prioritize their bedrooms for spring cleaning. Cleaning the bedroom may involve focusing on tasks like using a damp microfiber cloth to remove dust from furniture and cleaning window sills.

Additionally, tackling the organization of wardrobes, which often involves sorting through clothes and throw pillows, is crucial for creating a peaceful and tranquil sleeping space.

Bathroom Sanitization

Bathrooms, being critical for hygiene and personal care, are among the top priorities in spring cleaning, with 59% of Americans focusing on these spaces.

Effective cleaning probably involves using a cleaning solution for sanitizing surfaces and ensuring areas like light fixtures and ceiling fans are free from dust. Regular sanitization likely promotes a healthy environment, but may also enhance the comfort and aesthetics of these essential spaces.

Outdoor and Garage Cleaning

The outdoor area and garage, though only a priority for one-quarter (27%) of American spring cleaners, should not be overlooked. Essential tasks include cleaning and organizing the garage, and checking the fire extinguisher should also be part of the routine.

Additionally, using a wet cloth to wash windows and caring for the garden or patio area can potentially enhance your home's curb appeal and functionality.
